Throw pillows are the jewellery of a living room. They are inexpensive to change, easy to move and they can make a tired sofa look brand new. Yet too many pillows, or the wrong mix, can make a room feel busy instead of inviting. Here is the approach our stylists use.
Start with the room, not the pillow
Look at the colours already in the space: the rug, the curtains, the artwork and the wood tones. Pick one main colour and one accent from what is already there. Pillows that echo something across the room look intentional, while pillows that introduce a brand new colour tend to look like an afterthought.
Mix pattern scales
A pleasing arrangement usually combines a large pattern, a smaller pattern and a plain or textured solid. Keep the colours related so the patterns feel like a family.
- Large pattern: a bold floral, ikat or geometric that sets the mood.
- Small pattern: a stripe, check or tiny print that repeats one colour from the large pattern.
- Solid: linen, velvet or boucle that gives the eye a place to rest.
Play with texture
Even in a calm, neutral room, texture adds depth. Pair smooth cotton with nubby wool, soft velvet with crisp linen, or a chunky knit with a woven cover. Texture is especially helpful in winter, when rooms benefit from feeling a little cosier.
Stylist tip: choose feather or feather-blend inserts one size larger than the cover. They look fuller, hold the classic soft chop and keep their shape longer.
Arrange with balance, not strict symmetry
For a formal look, mirror the arrangement on each end of the sofa. For a relaxed look, place larger pillows at the ends and smaller ones toward the middle, then vary the pairing slightly on each side. Leave enough room to actually sit down comfortably.
Refresh with the seasons
Keep your base pillows and swap a couple of covers as the seasons change. Lighter linens and botanicals suit warmer months, while richer velvets and deeper tones bring warmth to cooler evenings. It is the easiest way to give your home a new feeling without starting again.
