Caring for Indoor Plants Through the Changing Seasons

Plants make a home feel alive, but their needs shift through the year. A simple seasonal routine keeps them healthy and looking their best.

Indoor plants soften hard edges, bring colour and make a home feel alive. Like us, though, they notice the seasons. Light, warmth and humidity shift through the year, and a few simple adjustments keep your plants healthy and looking their best.

Spring: wake up and refresh

As days lengthen, plants begin growing again. This is the time to repot anything that has outgrown its container, choosing a pot only slightly larger than the last. Wipe dust from leaves so they can soak up light, and start feeding lightly with a balanced plant food.

Summer: water wisely and watch the sun

Warm weather means faster drying soil, so check plants more often. Water when the top of the soil feels dry rather than on a fixed routine. Strong afternoon sun through glass can scorch leaves, so move delicate plants back from bright windows or filter the light with a sheer curtain.

  • Group plants together to create a little pocket of humidity.
  • Turn pots now and then so plants grow evenly instead of leaning.
  • Watch for pests on new growth and wipe them away early.

Autumn: ease off gently

Growth slows as light fades. Reduce feeding, water a little less and move plants closer to windows to make the most of shorter days. Bring in any plants that spent summer outdoors before cooler nights arrive.

Stylist tip: choose a pot colour that ties into your room. Terracotta warms up neutral spaces, while glazed ceramics in sage or plum echo soft furnishings and make plants feel part of the decor.

Winter: keep them cosy

Most houseplants rest in winter. Water sparingly, keep them away from cold drafts and heating vents, and resist the urge to repot. A humidifier or a tray of pebbles and water can help tropical plants cope with dry indoor air.

Style them like decor

Plants look best when they are placed with the same care as furniture. Mix heights, let trailing plants spill from shelves and give a large statement plant its own corner. With a little seasonal attention, they will reward you all year round.
